Drinking Gourd Farms is guided by 4 principles:

  • Healthy, culturally appropriate food is a human right for Black people. We know that. We don’t have to explain it to ourselves. We do have to declare it to the corporations, the politicians, the nonprofits, and America’s white supremacist mainstream culture. They are the ones that are targeting our community with food that is killing us and profiting from an industrialized food system that continues to steal our labor.

  • We must build Black power in order to create the space for sovereign food sources, reduce current harms, and dismantle the existing food system that is an extension of white settler colonialism.

  • Black people must ensure our own fresh, nutritious food alternatives that are independent of the industrialized food system that is killing and oppressing us. That means controlling our own destiny and determining our own future as Black communities through healing, organizing, and resistance.

  • Collective Black land ownership and stewardship as a politically radical practice is critical to securing Black liberation and building an equitable, sustainable food system.
