About Drinking Gourd Farms

Drinking Gourd Farms is building a community of politically-aligned Black farmers, gardeners, and homesteaders in Arizona that are focused on the physical, mental, and spiritual health of Black people through movement building, agriculture, health and wellness, and environmental stewardship.

Members of Drinking Gourd Farms are developing a collective food sovereignty practice across Phoenix fields, backyards, vacant lots, apartment balconies, and public spaces. We are securing independent, community determined healthy food sources that liberate Black people from the industrialized food system.

Our Leaders

Drinking Gourd Farms is led by an intergenerational group of Black Muslim refugee mothers.  Our leaders engage in a healing justice framework that is part political strategy and part wellness practice. Members are responding to generational trauma and contemporary violence with emergent, collective practices centered in wellness.

Support for Communities

In response to COVID-19, we are meeting the critical need for food for those Black people most at-risk (elders, houseless folks, people with pre-existing health issues, and poor people) by delivering free food boxes full of fresh organic fruits and vegetables grown by Black farmers and gardners.
